What are some tips for getting listed on DMOZ.org?

The following 5 steps will help get you listed in this important web directory. The listings in the DMOZ directory are used in search results by Netscape Search, AOL Search, Google, Lycos, HotBot, DirectHit, and hundreds of others.

1. Read the guidelines at http://www.dmoz.org/add.html

2. Browse to the MOST RELEVANT CATEGORY of DMOZ.org and click "add URL" from that page. Make sure to remember which category you choose.

3. Submit your site using a hype-free site title and description.

4. If after 30 days your site has not been added, contact the editor of that category by clicking on his or her name at the bottom of the category page. Ask her if your site has been rejected and why, or if it is still in the submission queue. Getting the attention of the editor is often enough to get your site added.

5. If the editor does not respond, go to the forums at http://www.resource-zone.com/ and ask for advice on getting listed. Be sure to mention your URL and which category you submitted to. Often, a meta-editor will see your post and add your site.

Reciprocal Link Request Template

The following template can be customized for your site to request reciprocal links from other webmasters. Reciprocal links -- in addition to attracting extra traffic themselves -- help improve your important Google PageRank:

Hi,

My name is _______________

I was looking at your web site www.marketingexperiments.com and think we should link to each other :-)

Exchanging links will help bring in more business for both your website and ours. An added benefit is increased search engine traffic because the search engines rank sites higher that have a good number of incoming links.

This is NOT a free-for-all link exchange, I don't waste my time with them and you shouldn't either. I am only linking to related websites so that all links are relevant.

I already added your website's listing www.requestedsite.com on our Reciprocal Links page and this page is directly linked from our home page. Please find your listing available on www.yoursitesname.com in the "General" sub-link.

If you are interested, please copy the HTML code available at www.yoursitesname.com on your web site.

After giving us a link, please send us a confirmation email at you@yoursitename.com. Please mention the URL where you have given us a link so we can confirm it.

Thanks & Regards,

Your Signature

P.S. Please respond by __________, so we can put your listings on the top of our Partners Page

Google PageRank Part II Outline

(B.2) How To Attract Strong Mutual Links

I. The Basics (See report)

A. Google PageRank Section 2 (Steps 10-17, but especially note these two points below)

1. Submit to DMOZ.
2. Submit Testimonials.

B. Tools:

1. http://www.marketleap.com/publinkpop
2. http://www.linkpopularitycheck.com

II. Three special (oft-overlooked) ways:

A. Syndicated content

1. See notes from Brian Alt.
2. Consider MasterSyndicator: http://www.mastersyndicator.com/
3. Consider ProLinkz: http://www.prolinkz.com
4. Review our Log Entries
a) http://www.mecgroups.com/mec_pub_log/archives/000416.html
b) http://www.mecgroups.com/mec_pub_log/archives/000130.html
5. See attached notes from our Researcher Brian Alt:

B. Reviews

1. Refer back to Tom's Hardware or Review Center
2. Remember, you can still offer reviews as a part of your regular retail site.
3. Also, you can create your own separate review site.

C. Awards

1. Consult this resource: http://www.awardsscoop.org/
2. Multiple site submissions are not a good idea, as they will only serve to disqualify all of the sites for many awards. If you are going to submit multiple sites, Submit from different email addresses and under different names.
3. Your site must have an awards page on which awards won are featured, and you must be willing to display/link back any award won on your site.
4. Take the time to read the guidelines. Many award givers hide a certain "password" in their guidelines that you must include in your application to prove you have read them.
5. By conforming to the criteria of various award programs, your site will actually improve. Some programs require a privacy statement, compliance with COPPA, correct use of meta tags, etc.
6. Our next conference will be on how to win awards. (We will give you a list of the top 50 sites).

III. The Link Alliance

A. Send us an email saying that you would like to participate in a link alliance. administrator@marketingexperiments.com
B. We will compile all the addresses and send them out.

Syndication Notes

We are using a script called MasterSyndicator, available at: http://www.mastersyndicator.com/

MasterSyndicator allows you to set up unlimited syndication feeds and then simply paste in the formatted content that you would like others to be able to syndicate. Other webmasters can then simply insert a short line of JavaScript code onto their page to syndicate your content, which is updated automatically on their sites whenever you add new content to the feed.

MasterSyndicator is $99. MasterSyndicator Gateway, which allows you to specify which domains can pull your content feed (useful if you want to charge for the service), is $175.

Benefits of Gateway over MasterSyndicator:

- A new feature that the developer added to the script for us is the ability to send affiliate IDs (or other variables) to the script. The script then spits out the syndicated content with customized affiliate links for each affiliate.
- Specify which domains can pull the feed (“closed”) or you can allow everyone except certain blocked domains to pull it (“open”).
- Tracks impressions.
- You can schedule content to be activated in the future.

Important for PageRank: You must include a hard-coded HTML link in addition to the JavaScript. The JavaScript basically creates a dynamic page that cannot be indexed by Google.

Trade off – control vs. pagerank

We're currently syndicating full articles, research blogs, subscription forms, etc. to our affiliates.

Example:

http://www.mastersyndicator.com (example code)

http://beautifulshopping.com/marketing-pagerank.html

We are using a combination of My Affiliate Program (http://www.myaffiliateprogram.com) and ProLinkz (http://www.prolinkz.com/) to track click-throughs.

The developer has also just added a free, feature-lite version of Master Syndicator: http://www.mecgroups.com/mec_pub_log/archives/000416.html

RSS syndication differs from the above, which uses JavaScript. It is detailed here: http://www.mecgroups.com/mec_pub_log/archives/000130.html

(C.3) Reference Notes

STATS ON GOOGLE
• Google receives 250 million searches per day.
• Google controls roughly 40 percent of the market. In February 2003, it received 83 million more searches than Overture, its nearest competitor. (*6)
• Google searches more than 3 billion web pages.
• Google attracts 73.5 million unique visitors per month (Nielsen/NetRatings 2/03).
• Google offers its results in 35 languages and 50 percent of its traffic comes from outside the U.S.
• Google has 800+ employees with 60 PhD's on staff.

NOTES ON SYNDICATION (FROM BRIAN ALT)

Several subscribers have asked what we are using to syndicate our content. For the full tables and articles, we are using a script called MasterSyndicator, available at: http://www.mastersyndicator.com/.

MasterSyndicator allows you to set up unlimited syndication feeds and then simply paste in the formatted content that you would like others to be able to syndicate. Other webmasters can then simply insert a short line of code onto their page to syndicate your content, which is updated automatically on their sites whenever you add new content to the feed.

MasterSyndicator is $99. MasterSyndicator Gateway, which allows you to specify which domains can pull your content feed (useful if you want to charge for the service), is $175.

We've just started using MasterSyndicator Gateway with our affiliate program. A new feature that the developer added to the script for us is the ability to send affiliate IDs (or other variables) to the script. The script then spits out the syndicated content with customized affiliate links for each affiliate.

We're currently syndicating full articles, research blogs, subscription forms, etc. to our affiliates.

MasterSyndicator Gateway also tracks impressions.

We are using a combination of My Affiliate Program and ProLinkz (http://www.prolinkz.com/) to track click-throughs.

What are the 7 primary causes of site display errors and what can you do to prevent them?

  1. HTML Errors - Some browsers are more forgiving than others. If your site contains a single overlapping tag, it may not display properly.

SOLUTION: Test your site in an HTML validator. We will explain how, later in this report.

  2. Browser Quirks - Different browsers have different peculiarities. For instance, while most browsers do not require that a table have the closing tag </TD>, Netscape 4.0 will not even display a nested table if does not have the closing tag. (This obnoxious little vice corrupts a lot of attractive web designs).

SOLUTION: Pray, build good karma, and/or seek therapy. This is about trial and error; this is about compromise. Check your site on different systems.

  3. Font Sizes - User preferences can increase the size of yourtypeface by 50%. This can "stretch" your table, and distort the appearance of your site.

SOLUTION: Use Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), with pixels as the units of measure, to control your font size. Be especially careful with the fonts on your navigation bar.

  4. Computer Types - The MAC still has 12% of the market; it is especially popular among artists and designers. Even when using identical browsers, your site may display differently on a MAC than on a PC. Many designers are not aware that Microsoft outsources the development of IE for the MAC. This version of IE is rather infamous for its quirks and bugs.

SOLUTION: Simplify. Avoid "cutting edge" designs. Art is for artists. Hang it on the wall, don't put in on your page.

  5. Browsers - A web browser interprets one language (HTML) into another (your display). But as with any translation, there are different means of expression. Although the World Wide Web Consortium has agreed to a general set of standards, there remains a lot of room for interpretation. Case in point, although the standards state that a browser should support a CELLSPACING attribute, the standards don't define the value for that attribute.

SOLUTION: Avoid using HTML extensions and (here we go again) test your site on multiple systems.

  6. Screen Resolutions - While the standard for a MAC is 1024 X 768, most Internet surfers are limited to 800 X 600 or less. Many designers, when planning for screen width, fail to allow enough room for variances.

SOLUTION: If you are designing for the 600 pixel layout, set your screen width for 560. If you are designing for an 800 pixel layout, set your screen width for 760.

  7. Browsers Versions - Newer browsers support newer versions of HTML. For instance, Netscape 6.0 is a complete rewrite. If you use Dynamic HTML pages that display well in 6.0, they may not display at all in 4.0.

SOLUTION: Once again... test your site on different systems.

What is Kubi Email Collaboration Software?

Kubi is a new team management application for Microsoft Outlook and Lotus Notes. It enables you to create folders, called "kubi spaces", that will track things like tasks, files, and team members. It also can create a sort of team discussion board and project timeline from your tasks. It's designed to communicate actively so that as team members add and subtract items in its categories, the team receives real-time updates.

Basically, it enables the team leaders and members to view what everyone has on their plate, assign/add tasks, see what the project needs to complete, organize meetings, and discuss ideas/goals. You can also create a group list of outside contacts, and even share important files with a simple drag and drop.

Overall, Kubi delivers exactly what it promises. A method by which small groups (teams, boards, or even entire small businesses) can quickly and actively manage a project. It eliminates the need for an IT team, and the interface is extremely intuitive, allowing those with little computer savvy to actively participate and even manage without wasting precious time on technical training.

Kubi does, however, still have some rough edges.

-Problems with integration, and some bugs with the current v1.1 Beta 2, make it a stickler when mistakes occur.
-We've ran into a couple errors that required technical support.
-Lack of in-depth documentation on the website that wasn't provided on download. (It is available upon request)
-Customer Support can be slightly frustrating at first, and some of their services aren't available yet. They utilize a "problem reporting form" as technical support requests.
-There appears to be a bug with things getting stuck in the outbox on Outlook. Easily circumventable, but it can be annoying.
-It can create a high volume of email. If you use an outside email server and create a lot of kubi spaces in a short period, adding team members, you could potentially read your cap on hourly emails. This can slow down the process or create problems if your email provider deletes all excess emails rather than queuing them. It's recommended you check with your provider concerning their email control policies.

Despite the issues, Kubi has great potential, and the company itself has been very receptive to suggestions and feedback. They have actively pursued constructive criticism, and appear to be taking steps to improve their product and services.
